๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Beginner Guide: How to Install Mods in Captain of Industry ๐Ÿšข

Hello Captains! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This guide explains how to install mods for Captain of Industry after downloading them from COI Hub or another mod page.

It is written for complete beginners, so every step is explained clearly and slowly. ๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŒŸ Quick Summary

โœ… Basic Installation Flow

  1. ๐Ÿ“ฆ Download the mod
  2. ๐Ÿงฐ Extract the .zip file
  3. ๐Ÿ“ Put the mod folder inside the Captain of Industry Mods folder
  4. ๐ŸŽฎ Start the game
  5. โš™๏ธ Enable the mod
  6. โœ… Enjoy modded gameplay

๐ŸชŸ Windows Installation

๐Ÿ“ฆ 1. Download the Mod

Download the mod from the mod page.

Most mods come as a:

๐Ÿ“ฆ .zip file

โš ๏ธ Important:
Do NOT put the .zip file directly into the Mods folder.

You usually must extract it first.

๐Ÿ“ 2. Open the Mods Folder

Press:

โŒจ๏ธ Windows Key + R

Paste this:

๐Ÿ“ %APPDATA%\Captain of Industry\Mods

Press:

โŽ Enter

๐Ÿ“‚ If the Folder Does Not Exist

Create a new folder named:

๐Ÿ“ Mods

The full path usually looks like this:

๐Ÿ“ C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\Captain of Industry\Mods

โš ๏ธ Important Warning

This is NOT the Steam game installation folder.

โŒ Wrong location:

๐Ÿ“ Steam\steamapps\common\Captain of Industry

โœ… Correct location:

๐Ÿ“ %APPDATA%\Captain of Industry\Mods

Captain of Industry loads mods from the AppData folder.

๐Ÿงฐ 3. Extract the Mod

Right-click the downloaded .zip file.

Choose:

๐Ÿ“ฆ Extract All...

Extract it into:

๐Ÿ“ %APPDATA%\Captain of Industry\Mods

โœ… Correct Folder Structure

After extracting, the folder should look like this:

โœ… Correct:

๐Ÿ“ Mods\ExampleMod\ExampleMod.dll

This means the .dll file is directly inside the mod folder.

โŒ Wrong Folder Structures

โŒ Wrong:

๐Ÿ“ Mods\ExampleMod.zip

โžก๏ธ The zip file is not extracted.

โŒ Wrong:

๐Ÿ“ Mods\ExampleMod\ExampleMod-v1.2\ExampleMod.dll

โžก๏ธ Too many folders deep.

โœ… Fix

Move the real mod folder so it becomes:

โœ… Mods\ExampleMod\ExampleMod.dll

๐Ÿง Linux / Steam Deck Installation

โš ๏ธ Captain of Industry currently has no official native Linux version.

Most Linux and Steam Deck players use:

๐Ÿงช Steam Proton

Because of that, the mod folder is inside Protonโ€™s Windows folder.

๐Ÿ“ Common Linux Path

๐Ÿ“ ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1594320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Captain of Industry/Mods

๐ŸŽฎ Common Steam Deck Path

๐Ÿ“ /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1594320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Captain of Industry/Mods

๐Ÿ“ฆ Flatpak Steam Path

๐Ÿ“ ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1594320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Captain of Industry/Mods

๐Ÿงฐ Linux Install Steps

  1. ๐Ÿ“ฆ Download the mod
  2. ๐Ÿงฐ Extract the .zip file
  3. ๐Ÿ“ Find the Proton folder
  4. ๐Ÿ“‚ Open or create the Mods folder
  5. ๐Ÿ“ Put the extracted mod folder inside Mods
  6. ๐ŸŽฎ Start the game
  7. โš™๏ธ Enable mod support if needed
  8. ๐Ÿ”„ Restart the game
  9. โœ… Activate the mod

๐ŸŽ macOS Installation

โš ๏ธ Captain of Industry currently has no official native macOS version.

Mac users usually play through:

๐Ÿท CrossOver
๐Ÿฅƒ Whisky
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK)
โ˜๏ธ Cloud streaming services

If you use cloud streaming, you usually cannot install local mods manually.

๐Ÿท CrossOver Example Path

๐Ÿ“ ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/YOUR_BOTTLE_NAME/drive_c/users/crossover/AppData/Roaming/Captain of Industry/Mods

Replace:

YOUR_BOTTLE_NAME

with your actual bottle name.

๐ŸŽ Mac Install Steps

  1. ๐Ÿ“ฆ Download the mod
  2. ๐Ÿงฐ Extract the .zip file
  3. ๐Ÿท Open your bottle/prefix
  4. ๐Ÿ“ Find the drive_c folder
  5. ๐Ÿ“ Open the AppData path
  6. ๐Ÿ“‚ Create or open the Mods folder
  7. ๐Ÿ“ Put the mod folder inside
  8. ๐ŸŽฎ Start the game
  9. โš™๏ธ Enable mod support if needed
  10. ๐Ÿ”„ Restart the game
  11. โœ… Activate the mod

๐ŸŽฎ 4. Activate the Mod

After opening the game, ๐ŸŽฎ start a new game or ๐Ÿ’พ open the save/load screen.

If you see a mod list, enable the mod you want to use. โœ…

Example:

image.png

๐Ÿ’ก Helpful Tip:

For large gameplay-changing mods:

๐Ÿ†• Starting a new save is usually safer

unless the mod author says existing saves are supported.

โœ… Quick Checklist

Before asking for help, check this list:

โœ… The mod is extracted
โœ… The mod is not still zipped
โœ… The mod is inside the correct Mods folder
โœ… The mod folder contains a .dll file
โœ… The .dll is not buried too deep
โœ… Mod support is enabled in-game
โœ… You restarted the game after enabling mods
โœ… The mod supports your current game version

๐Ÿงฏ Troubleshooting

โ“ The Mod Does Not Appear

First, check your folder structure.

The game usually expects:

๐Ÿ“ Mods\ModName\ModName.dll

Also make sure:

๐Ÿ”„ You restarted the game after enabling mods.

๐Ÿ” Very Important Extra Tip

Sometimes the mod actually loaded correctly, but the changes are difficult to notice at first. ๐Ÿ‘€

Many mods add things like:

๐Ÿ†• New buttons
๐Ÿ“š New research
โš™๏ธ Hidden settings
๐Ÿญ New buildings
๐Ÿ“‹ Extra menus
๐Ÿ”ง Small UI buttons
๐Ÿงฉ Features inside existing systems

Some modders show beautiful screenshots of what the mod does, but do not always explain:

โ“ Where to find the new feature
โ“ How to activate it
โ“ Which menu changed

This can make it look like the mod failed to load, even when it is working perfectly.

๐Ÿ’ก What You Should Do? ๐Ÿค”

Before assuming the mod is broken:

โœ… Carefully read the mod description
โœ… Look at screenshots closely
โœ… Search for new UI buttons or research
โœ… Check build menus and research trees
โœ… Read comments/discussions if available

Sometimes the mod feature is simply โ€œhiddenโ€ somewhere unexpected. ๐Ÿ”Ž

This tip alone can save a LOT of confusion for new players โ€” and save modders a lot of support time too. โค๏ธ

If you are unclear about something, don't afraid to ask the modders directly! They are very nice people~

๐Ÿ” I Cannot Find AppData (Windows)

Try press:

โŒจ๏ธ Windows Key + R

Paste:

๐Ÿ“ %APPDATA%

Press:

โŽ Enter

Then open:

๐Ÿ“ Captain of Industry\Mods

๐Ÿง I Cannot Find the Folder on Linux / Steam Deck

Launch the game once first.

Then check the Proton folder for Steam app ID:

๐ŸŽฎ 1594320

Common path:

๐Ÿ“ steamapps/compatdata/1594320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Captain of Industry/Mods

๐ŸŽ I Cannot Find the Folder on Mac

If using:

๐Ÿท CrossOver
๐Ÿฅƒ Whisky
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ GPTK

Search inside your bottle/prefix for:

๐Ÿ“ Captain of Industry

Then create/open:

๐Ÿ“ Mods

๐Ÿ’ฅ The Game Crashes After Installing a Mod

Try this:

  1. โŒ Close the game
  2. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Remove the newest mod
  3. ๐ŸŽฎ Start the game again
  4. ๐Ÿ” Check if the mod supports your game version

๐Ÿ“œ Log Files

You can check logs here:

๐Ÿ“ %APPDATA%\Captain of Industry\Logs

On Linux or Mac, the Logs folder is inside the same user data folder.

๐Ÿ†˜ Still Having Problems?

If the game still crashes:

๐Ÿ’ฌ Ask the modder
๐Ÿ’ฌ Visit Discord/forum
๐Ÿ’ฌ Share your logs/screenshots

Most modders are happy to help if you provide useful information. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿง  Extra Tips for New Players

๐Ÿ’พ Make backup saves before using mods
๐Ÿงช Test one mod first before installing many
๐Ÿ“– Read the mod page carefully
๐Ÿ”„ Restart the game after changing mods
๐Ÿงน Remove old versions before updating mods
๐Ÿงฉ Some mods require dependency mods
โš ๏ธ Game updates can break mods

๐Ÿ’ฌ Community Troubleshooting Thread

๐Ÿ”— โ€œHaving trouble modding - manifest file not foundโ€

It contains a Linux Mint / Proton issue where the manifest.json file already existed, but the game still could not load the mod because the files were accidentally named using backslashes \ as part of the filename.

Hi.

All clear but... I have no checkbox or any other possibility called "Turn on mod support" in Settings >> Miscellaneous. I can only choose from two combo lists autosave settings, reset hints progress and sending bug reports. What now?

yep I've taken my guide from my experience one year ago, back then that button still exist, now can you skip to Step 5?
Try directly choose New Game and see if you have any mod automatically appear there, thank you for your feedback I will update the guide.

Yep. Right.

When I choose new game, I can select mods I want. For loading the game there is a button on the bottom: "DLC and Mods" (or something like this, I am using other language). There it is possible to pick mods.

Hi. In the chapter Troubleshooting/The Mod does not appear would be nice to add something like - try to find in the mod description of what kind of changes (new buttons, new research, new menu) and where the modder did, or better say "hidden" their creation. Modders like to describe with nice pictures what their mod will be doing, but rarely you will find information or screenshot with visual changes, not mentioning a short instruction of its use. It confused me not one time when it looked like the mod is missing to load, but later after contacting directly the modder finding out those "hidden" features. Maybe it could help modders to save their precious time in future.

noted, thank you for the advice! I updated it, please kindly check if that is good enough or not
