Description

Kayser's Compact Refinery

The Most Compact and Efficient Refinery

Current as of: v0.7.5b (Update 3)

General Description

  • Compact and flexible refinery for early/mid game. Highly efficient in terms of space, construction cost, workers, and maintenance.
  • 4 lanes which can be started as 1 lane and expanded incrementally as demand increases. (see images)
  • Easily accessible input/output storages for buffering, alerts, and easy mapping/connection of external transports.
  • Temporary buffer tanks for Light oil, Sour water, and Ammonia to manage incremental development. (see image)
  • Multiple built-in options for Ammonia and Sulfur processing.
  • Interconnected exhausts for easy connection to e.g. external exhaust filtration.
  • UPDATE 3: Now featuring Ammonia flame, Sulfur burner, and Organic fertilizer boosted fertilizer production.

Technical Features

  • Dual boiler with steam source selector for choice of primary type of boiler and smooth transitions between solid fuel and gas.
  • Gas boiler fuel selector for choice of primary fuel for Gas boiler: Heavy Oil, Naphtha, Fuel Gas, and/or Light Oil. Heavy Oil/Light Oil is the default priority.
  • Dual Chemical plants, Air separator, and Mixer for conversion of Ammonia to Fertilizer II, boosted by Organic Fertilizer, if available.
  • Emergency overflow Flame for Ammonia and Burner for Sulfur.
  • Acid Mixer to convert Sulfur to Acid. Same mixer can also make Slag from excess Sulfur (default=off). Note: Acid is sufficient for some initial copper and glass production. It will NOT be suffucient for gold/microchips or uranium processing at any decent scale.
  • Hydrogen Reformer for small scale Hydrogen production, such as some Cracking Units, Gas Kilns, or initial Silicon furnaces. NOT intended to supply a large Hydrogen vehicle or cargo ship fleet, or large scale Silicon proessing.
  • After Chemical Plant II, one of the Chemical Plants is easily repurposed as NH3 booster, supplying additional NH3 for e.g. Medical equipment or Chemical Fuel manufacturing (not included).
  • Note: This refinery has no cracking or overflow protection for Heavy Oil, Diesel, Naphtha, or Fuel Gas. Any of these products backing up will cause distillation to pause. If this is not desired, sufficient storage or some means of balancing must be implemented, such as flaming or cracking overflows. For general purpose balancing, Kayser's Cracking Auto-Cracker is recommended.

General Usage

  • Complete Refinery is "plug-and-play" ready. Select apropriate stage according to your technology level, and place.
  • All storages are preset for truck import/export. Connect pipes and belts as desired.
  • Set your choice of solid fuel in the solid fuel storage. Coal is the default.
  • Set your primary boiler (gas IN vs. solid IN) in the Steam Source Selector balancer (behind the boilers, partially concealed). Gas Boiler priority is the default. (Do not adjust the OUT priority here; sour water stripping needs is prioritized)
  • Set your preferred Gas boiler fuel in the Gas Boiler Fuel Selector balancer (behind the gas boiler). Heavy Oil (+Light Oil in stage #1) is the default.
  • If desired, enable Slag recipe in the Acid Mixer. Note that stage #2 and #3 are Sulfur negative, so it is recommended to maintain a stock of sulfur for use until Exhaust filtration can supply enough Sulfur.
  • Enable Sulfur storage import if you also want to import Sulfur to produce more Acid/Fertilizer II/Slag.
  • If temporary tanks are not sufficient (most of the time they won't be), upgrade and/or add more tanks.

Detailed stage descriptions See also images. Note that the minimum viable build depicted in image 3 is simply stage #1 with some structures not constructed.

Stage Description Technology Required Upgrade Preparation Upgrade Instructions Other Notes
1 Pre Naphtha Processing Advanced Diesel (Pipes II strongly recommended) Clear land. Place the BP. Connect transports and unpause structures incrementally as required. Apply BP again after researching Boiler (Gas), Sour Water Stripper, and Fertilizers to add respective structures. Add recipes in Flare, Burner, Mixer, Chem Plant, and Smoke stack as needed. Remove Sour Water and Ammonia tanks when obsolete/empty.
2 Post Naphtha--Pre Chemical Plant II Naphtha Processing Remove obstructing Light oil pipes. Appy BP again after researching Hydrogen Production. Upgrade both mixers to Mixer II when possible. Remove Light oil tank when obsolete/empty.
3 Post Chemical Plant II Chemical Plant II (Mixer II strongly recommended) Upgrade both Chemical Plants. Replace the recipes of the 'Secondary F1 / NH3' plant with the [H2 + N2 -> NH3] recipe. Remove its connected pipes (3 in, 1 out). Flush out any remaining Fertilizer I. Apply the BP. Check that the NH3 from the secondary plant enters the Ammonia Hub. You now have 6-14 surplus Ammonia (depending on Org Fert) in the Hub that you can use for e.g. medical or Chemical fuel.

Blueprint versions

Version Comment
1 Initial Version
2 Added Acid Mixer. Removed dependency on Pipe III. Replaced separate Naphtha and Fuel Gas pipes with mixed pipe for Gas Boiler fuel. Minor tweaks to reduce cost.
3 Major overhaul for Update 3. Added emergency Flame for Ammonia, Burner for Sulfur, Organic Fertilizer for boosting Fertilizer. Adjusted pipe dimensions for new ratios (more Naphtha, less Fuel Gas). Reduced BP from 9 to 3 stages.
4 Fixed some incorrect pipe dimensions for Naphtha and Fuel Gas. Removed some unnecessary pipes from Stage 1

Enjoy your petroleum products! (Beware of global warming)

not bad but i have problems with excess products i think this need second version where there is no outputs or just to make on type of fuel this block is nice but i think this need version where we have lower naphta out ( only for plastic),and rubber, and rest for heavy oil is to much left maybe on start is good but when you have hydrogen better use it all to production and dont left anything.
@halcyforn Check out https://hub.coigame.com/Blueprint/Detail/581
This is great, but... OMG. You have the most gottdamn bloody clever arse method of making the blueprint buildable in stages I have EVER seen. Self-explanatory, no imgur links or youtube tutorials needed, the anchor points made it almost inescapably obvious... DUDE. Well done.
@Rauken Thank you for the compliment. The BP has now been simplified to 3 stages instead of 9, but I kept the anchor points and I will continue to use them in my other staged designs.
